Few can deny the instant impact a bold new lipstick can have on your look, especially when you have a premier event to attend like Fashion Festival. Leading M.A.C make-up artist Amber D created the fresh flawless complexions and bright bold lips for our Fashion Festival campaign.

As one of the best make-up artists working in New Zealand today, Amber tells us her insider tricks of the trade and how we too can achieve that perfect pout.

NZFF: Can you tell us the idea behind the look for the Fashion Festival campaign?

Amber D: I wanted to create makeup looks that were individual, on trend, and easily achievable at home… so glowing summer skin with electric bright lips was the obvious choice!

NZFF: What were the main products used to achieve this?
AD: All the girls wore M.A.C Matchmaster foundation – in the same shade (1.5)! It’s such an awesome foundation as it gives flawless creamy skin but the tone will adjust to match your own skin – so the perfect match is always achieved.  I also used lipsticks from the Shop M.A.C, Cook M.A.C collection. (Out March 2012) For sheer metallic eyes I used the new M.A.C Prolongwear eye shadows and popped out the corners with M.A.C Platinum pigment.

NZFF: What’s the colour trend for eyes and lips this summer?
AD: For lips it’s anything bright!  From clear bold reds to plugged-in pinks and on-fire oranges!  Every woman should own a M.A.C Lady Danger lipstick – the perfect cross between red and orange. For eyes it’s fresh and with an athletic edge.  Look for products that have a sheer weight and are long wearing (who wants to be touching up all day?) I LOVE M.A.C Bamboom Paint and M.A.C Sweet Satisfaction Prolongwear eyeshadow.

NZFF: One trend is a bold lip colour; can you tell us the secret achieving that perfect pout?
AD: The trick when applying a bright lip is to use a lip pencil in a colour that will electrify the lipstick shade not dull it down.  When I’m doing a bright pink lip I like to use What A Blast Prolongwear lip pencil (a clear orange) as a base to make it more fluoro looking. Before applying lip products I will lightly wash a bit of concealer along the lip line to ensure the lip looks clean and bold.

NZFF: What’s your favourite M.A.C product and why?
AD: The IMPOSSIBLE question! Only ONE? Well, I can tell you that I LOVE the entire Prolongwear range as I always want my makeup to have maximum staying power and it this range has it all… Foundation (15+ hours), Concealer (15+ hours), Lipgloss (6 hours), Lipstick (6 hours), Lip Pencils (15 hours), Eyeshadow… amazing! Plus they are all lightweight and easy to wear!

NZFF: Can you tell us about any new M.A.C products that will be coming out in the future?
AD: We are all SO excited at M.A.C for the new Nicki Minaj & Ricky Martin VIVAGLAM lipsticks to be launched in April.  While my lips are sealed about the exact shades and products I can tell you that the launch will be MAJOR with everyone wanting it! Plus 100% of the selling price of any VIVAGLAM product goes to the M.A.C Aids Fund so we can all look hot for a good cause.

NZFF: As a makeup artist, what are you looking forward to most at Fashion Festival?
AD: Doing makeup!!!! (And of course the whole M.A.C team love working backstage so we can’t wait for that!)

NZFF: You’re providing the makeup for all of the shows at Fashion Festival – can you give us an insight into what it’s like backstage?

AD: At first it’s very calm and organized then, like all fashion shows, about an hour away from show time everything goes crazy with models arriving late, rehearsals and getting our job done!  We are experts at doing amazing makeup in minimal time.
